Synopsis

Mara Thomas is depressed. She wants to start over and leave her past behind. Trauma has left her socially stunted, struggling to maintain friendships. She has no interest in ever dating again, although she won’t say why. She needs to work through her troubled past and personality flaws to succeed in her new life, but she can’t seem to motivate herself to try.

Logan Donnelly is also depressed, complete with a drinking problem. He is haunted by his own past. Like Mara, he struggles to move forward in a healthy way. He’s annoyed at Mara for sulking around at parties and social gatherings, claiming her depression is depressing him. He needs to take accountability for his own life, but always seems to fail in that department.

The last thing either of them needs is to get tangled up in a secret relationship, but that’s exactly where they find themselves. With all their time spent focused on each other, neither makes any headway on their individual issues. When their worlds come together, they come apart. Now, the fire they inadvertently lit is turning everything around them to ash, and it may burn away their future instead of just their troubled pasts.

What People Are Saying

Laura (Goodreads Review)

"Controlled Burn is one of those books that gets better and more intense with each passing chapter. You not only want to know what’s going on, you need to know. I found myself drawn to Mara right away and she definitely sent me through a range of emotions throughout the novel. Watching the progression of both Mara and Logan’s characters and relationships was like watching my favourite TV show unfold. I felt like I was hanging out with some of my good friends (shout out to Chick!), but also felt like I was having my heart torn out and ripped into a million pieces at the same time. Nomi Palmer does not shy way from some of life’s more difficult topics, but she does handle them with dignity, truth and respect. A very unique and wonderful read!"

Janille S. (Goodreads Review)

"This was really unlike any romance I’ve read. The vibes between Mara and Logan were incredibly unique, and although this was a slow burn, it was also fascinating to watch Mara and Logan’s relationship from the very start of the book, in bits and pieces. Highly recommend as this is something totally different for the genre!"

Linda T. (Amazon Review)

"I really enjoyed this book!
Loved the characters, and loved the "controlled burn" of the storyline... it's a really good read! Nomi Palmer manages to capture the day to day struggles and hurdles, that so many of our younger generation encounter on a day to day basis."
